The skate park works are underway and are due to be finished end of August. We hope to have an opening event on 14 September 5pm to 6.30pm.
This all follows public consultation last year at the Camelford Show, a “Meet the Designers” visit, and visits to Sir James Smith’s Secondary School and Camelford Primary School where children had a chance to look at the designs and make suggestions.
In partnership with The Town Trust, who have kindly agreed to lease the land to us, we have a big vision for the Old Cattle Market site. Phase 1 is the Skate Park, and Phase 2 and 3 will involve a basketball court, cafe and gym area. This is dependent on planning and funding. Grants will be applied for during the Autumn.
OCM SKATE PARK CLUB
The first skate park club meeting was held on 16 August and was extremely well attended. A vote took place via Instagram and Facebook during the weekend on the name of the skate park club and it was unanimously decided to call it the “OCM Skate Park Club” which stands for Old Cattle Market and connects to the heritage and rest of the site development. Roles were also decided at this meeting, and we are delighted to report that the following people will be taking on the following roles:
Kev – Chair (and main contact with Mount Hawke)
Lucy Lawler – Treasurer
Kristie Sturtridge – Secretary
Ayla Johnson/Leah Coshall – Website/social media development
Aaron Hockerday – Fundraising/grants
We are partnering with Mount Hawke Skate Park who will help us engage our young people and provide expert advice on running a skate park. This is all part of an initiative “Skate Cornwall” to recognise Cornwall as a major skate boarding destination. We will link in with competitions around Cornwall and have access to their challenges, to try and encourage progression in skate boarding, scooter and BMX skills. We are delighted with this partnership which will provide much needed guidance and support.
If you would like to join the OCM, either as a junior member (under 18) or adult member (over 18s) please contact Ayla Johnson – AylaJohnson@hotmail.co.uk or call 017428 747421.
